Rwanda: A Historical Perspective

Independence and the Rwandan Genocide

Rwanda, officially the Republic of Rwanda, is a landlocked country in the Great Rift Valley of Central Africa.
On 1 July 1962, Belgium, with UN oversight, granted full independence to the country. However, ethnic tensions between the majority Hutu population and the minority Tutsi minority group erupted into a bloody civil war in 1994. The Rwandan genocide, which occurred between 7 April and 19 July 1994, claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Tutsi people.
